Cisco’s Continuing Education Program - An Overview
The latest Continuing Education Program is introduced to make the recertification process easy for the certified professionals. The best part is that for getting re-certified under this program you don’t have to appear for CCIE written exam.
Yes!!! But in this case, you will have to earn a certain amount of credit for re-certifying which is an alternative of CCIE Exam for re-certification.

For earning the credits, you simply need to complete the learning material, activities which include latest trends, technological advancements & much more.
You can easily complete the learning material and activities via Cisco Live training, instructor-led training, online courses etc. And once you earn a necessary number of credits, you will be eligible for re-certification.
Before your Cisco CCIE certification goes inactive, you have to pay the administrative fees of USD 300 for enrolling in Cisco’s Education Program as well as earn 100 credits and get re-certified without giving CCIE written examination.
This Continuing Education Program is launched on 6th June 2017. Thus, the Cisco courses which are completed before this date are not eligible for recertification under this program.
Is Cisco Education Program For You – Check?
Candidates holding CCIE or CCDE certification either with an inactive or suspended status are eligible to re-certify under Cisco Education Program. In addition, candidates holding Cisco certification with Emeritus status are also eligible to re-certify under this educational program.
However, there are few restrictions for the candidates holding Emeritus status. Candidates who fall under the below category with Emeritus status are not eligible to re-certify under Cisco Education Program.
- Candidates who have to pass written as well as the lab examination for becoming active again.
- Candidates who have achieved the Emeritus status through earning Business Transformation Certifications.
Remember, if you are holding CCNA or CCNP certification then you are not eligible for re-certifying under Cisco’s Continuing Education Program. This new recertification policy is not applicable for Cisco CCNA and Cisco CCNP certified candidates.
Requirements For Getting Re-certified Via Continuing Education Program
For getting re-certified via Continuing Education Program you need to fulfill few of requirements. Let’s have a look at the requirements –
- For re-certifying any of your CCIE certification, you will have to earn 100 credits before your existing Cisco certification goes inactive.
- You credit submission should be approved by the concerned content provider.
- You will be given the 'certificate of completion’ for pre-approved self-paced Cisco training which you can upload during the submission of your claim.
- Pay the administration fee of USD 300 for enrolling in the program.
Post completion of the above-listed steps, your certification will get renewed as per the recertification policies.

Planning To Earn Credits!!! Know The Rules…..
Credits are playing a great role in the new Cisco recertification policy. Thus, there are also certain rules regarding credit usage by the candidates. Let’s know the rules –
1. Once you earn the Credits it will remain valid for the duration of three years considering from the date of earning the credit till the time any of the below-listed criteria is not met –
- If any new recertification cycle is started, either by re-certifying any other credential or by passing any other exam then the credit will expire.
- If the certification goes inactive before you complete the Cisco’s Continuing Education requirements then your hard-earned credits will expire.
2. Credits which are earned for the particular course can be used once in the recertification cycle. If you repeat the same course then the same credits will not be counted for recertification.
3. Once the credits are used, it cannot be reused for recertification of any other track.
4. You have to use your hard-earned credits –
- Before the expiry of the credit
- Or during the certification cycle in which you have earned the credits; whichever is earlier.

Now, CCIE’s will not have to undertake CCIE written examination at every two years for holding an active CCIE status and staying up with the technology.
