CCIE R&S Version Update - V4 To V5

Few months back Cisco had announced up gradation of CCIE R&S version from V4 to V5. The announcement was made to inform CCIE R&S aspirants about version 4’s expiry which was not implemented up till recently. The CCIE R&S version 4 was available to students till 3^rd June, 2014 post which version 5 became active, that is from 4^th June, 2014 onwards CCIE R&S V5 has replaced version 4. Number of changes have been made to written and lab exam’s syllabus making it completely different from the earlier one.

The written exam for CCIE R&S V4 earlier was referred to as 300-001 but now it has been changed and replaced to 400-101. Fact which remains the same till date that is you need to take and clear the written exam before going for the CCIE R&S lab exam. Earlier lab and written exam topics were nearly identical but now the scenarios has gone completely different. Lab exam for version 5 has seen major changes in its syllabus/blueprint. Certain topics which were not present have been added and few already existing have been removed. Major topics like frame relay which were an important part of the previous syllabi have been removed and replaced by Dynamic Multipoint VPN (DMVPN) within single hub. In version 5 IPV6 is more contained within the syllabus as compared to CCIE R&S version 4. The new changes made by Cisco are more technological and advanced in sync with latest trends and IT technologies in the market. These changes have made CCIE R&S certification more interesting thereby adding value to the ever green scope at the same time.

The lab for CCIE R&S earlier had only two modules which now have been upgraded to three separate modules that is troubleshooting, diagnostic, and configuration sections. The troubleshooting part is same with slightest of change which is that one depending upon his or her requirement of time can borrow up to 30 minutes from the configuration section, if time given gets shorter to solve the tickets.  However if one is capable enough to solve troubleshooting section within the given time frame than those extra minutes can be used further to re-check solutions or logging or script tripping faults/errors at the end of exam. Coming to configuration module of CCIE R&S version 5 Lab exam,  is shorter as compared to the first module giving aspirants freedom to finish it and use the left over time in other modules of the CCIE R&S V5 lab exam i.e. troubleshooting or diagnostic module. Major change introduced within this module is that Version 5 has now gone completely virtual. This change has been implemented to reduce Cisco’s cost in working of labs as a result of which more mobile labs will now become available at more different places. This change has also allowed topologies to be bigger while shifting the virtual hardware helping Cisco to focus more on rules and configurations instead of hardware related mild distinction in CCIE R&S V5 lab exam.

The latest module which has been added to V5 lab is the Diagnostic section. This module or section of CCIE R&S Lab exam is of 30 minutes only, validating aspirant’s ability to correct/rectify problems which lie outside the troubleshooting section of the CCIE R&S lab exam. One constraint with this is that only limited amount of diagnostic information can be used while diagnosing/rectifying the issues occurred. It will expect candidate to identify the place of issue using a device through pictorial representation or select one option from the multiple choices given. This section might be of lesser minutes as compared to others but doesn’t lack priority which clearly signifies that candidates must pass this module in order to pass the CCIE R&S Lab exam. This section will expect individuals to read mails, update tickets, exam diagrams or analyze packet captures to fix an issue. Due to absence of device dependency, the pool of questions put across can be huge with high probability of frequently changed content, etc. Also to note that this section or module has been introduced at place of OEQs (open ended questions) which appeared during start of the CCIE R&S Lab exam earlier.
